Scholarships

Students who are active members of a Key Club in the Florida District may apply for scholarships provided through the Florida Kiwanis Foundation. Each year, the Florida District awards multiple scholarships to Florida's Key Club students.

T‚Äčhe Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven Foundation is proud to sponsor three $1,000 annual scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Scholarships are merit-based and require a 150-word essay on the merits of high school community service. Preference is given to members of Key Clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven at Chain of Lakes Collegiate HS, Lake Region HS, Winter Haven Sr HS, and The Homeschool Connection.

In 2016, the Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven Foundation partnered with the Polk Education Foundation to endow our Key Club scholarships, establishing a permanent pool of funds that are professionally invested to ensure the perpetuation of these annual awards. Scholarships are promoted online every January/February through the Polk County School District and Polk Education Foundation. Monies are awarded in the spring of each year; funds are not distributed directly to the student. A check is mailed payable to the college of the student's choice once the student is enrolled. PEF requires students send a thank you letter for acknowledgement of receipt.

For more information and to apply online, visit the Polk Education Foundation scholarship page.

Gould-Parker Memorial
Key Club Scholarship

The Gould-Parker Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of Dick Parker and Phillip Jay Gould, two former members of the WHHS Key Club who were lost in a plane crash in January 1959 while attending college. Phillip Jay Gould, known as "Spike," and Dick Parker graduated from WHHS in 1957. Gould played Varsity basketball while Parker competed as a tennis player. After graduation, Gould attended Tulane University for one year on a Navy Scholarship and then transferred to the University of Florida for his sophomore years as an Engineering major. His sister, Jane Erickson, said of her brother Spike, "he was a good guy - bright and mischievous - a fun combination."

Created through fundraisers by the WHHS Key Club in the early 1960s, the grant in its original form was a college loan fund intended to be paid back by recipients to then be used again by new recipients. It later became a scholarship award supported in partnership by the Gould family and Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven Foundation until 2016. At that time, the Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven Foundation endowed the $1,000 annual scholarship for perpetuity through the Polk Education Foundation.
